We are halfway through the year! How crazy is that?! This year has definitely flown by. Are you where you want to be in your career? Are you making moves to improve yourself? What steps are you willing to take? As a hairdresser, it’s very important to INVEST. You must invest your TIME and MONEY. Continuing education is essential to being successful in today’s ever evolving career path. Today we are given literally so many TOOLS to grow our business in regards to social media that other stylists didn’t have in the past. Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and still the powerful word of mouth, I mean the possibilities are endless. Are you going to evolve with today’s world or be left behind?
As of early 2018, according to the bureau of labor statistics, the average number of hairdressers and barbers were 673,000 and is predicted to grow 13% by 2026 averaging 87,600 MORE stylists and barbers. This industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the US. So what are you going to do to stand out and become better than the stylist down the street?
STEP 1 EDUCATION. The more education I receive, the more EXCITED/PASSIONATE I become behind my chair. Clients appreciate it when you continue your education. They appreciate that you won’t keep them wearing the same cut and style with no desire to change. People love that you are willing to keep things exciting with new techniques!
STEP 2; Work in a good environment. You CANNOT thrive and become successful in your craft if you work in a place where everyone fends for themselves. Surrounding yourself with goal oriented coworkers along with teamwork is crucial for you in this industry. Also know that there is PLENTY of heads to go around. Don’t get discouraged! There are so many different things each hairstylist can specialize in!
STEP 3; Keep your chin up and dont get discouraged. A lot of hairstylists get down on themselves because their social media doesn’t have a ginormous following. Does it REALLY matter how many followers you have? Does that pay your bills? No! The clients in your chair pays your bills. One thing I can say that has helped me with my clients is bringing more of YOURSELF to the table and being truly authentic. It’s better to be profitable rather than popular. Don’t get so caught up in followers and focus on serving your COMMUNITY the best you can.
